Episode 005 Aging Wines -You Gotta Know When to Hold 'em
Ok, I didn't sing "The Gambler" on air, but I did talk about when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em...in terms of wine, of course! In this episode Rick and I help explain what characteristics allow for a wine to be aged, the ideal storage conditions, and we name some wines that will age well.
In the news, we discuss Flash Sale sites and the Grape of the Week is Zinfandel (yeah we touch on White Zin too...even though I'm a bit of a hater).

Hi Elizabeth, Rick
I keep hearing and reading about Zinfandel on the web and what a great wine it makes. The sad thing is that we don’t really have a lot of Zin in sunny South Africa. My guess is that our climate is a bit too sunny for the grape’s liking.
I was in Germany last year for an academic trip to one of the universities in Berlin and while I was in one of their (not so) supermarkets, my eye caught an American Zinfandel label. Not one to pass up a R60 (about $8) bottle of never-before-tasted wine, I chucked it in the trolley along with the other groceries (read German beer). It was only when I got back to SA that I got the chance to open the bottle and pour the contents into a glass, to taste my first drop of the mysterious Zinfandel. And lo and behold, it was terrible! It went right down the sink.
I haven’t tried it since, but your podcast has persuaded me to give it another go. I’ve heard about a winery not too far away that makes a Zinfandel red and a white. I’ll try it and let you know!
Regards
Found your Podcast today and now will follow your blog also. I love wine but have no formal knowledge or training with it. The amount of information is overwhelming and I've tried to jump into learning about it a few times but quite frankly gave up. Your podcast was very user friendly and comical as well. Thank you! Maybe someday I can walk into our local wine shop with my head held high :)
Bosman,
Another option for you is to try Primativo from Italy. It's not the same exact grape, but it's darn close and may be more readily available in South Africa.
America has totally embraced Zinfandel in all its unabashed fruitiness, so I don't know if you'll find anything like it, but let us know what you find in the Zin from South Africa. In the warmer areas, it could do really well there so in the right hands it could be really tasty (although off air, I have to tell you I would never encourage you to drink White Zin -- I think it's a cop out and doesn't challenge your palate enough!!! Skip it & stick w/ the red!).
Look forward to a full report!!!
Elizabeth
Jessica,
Thanks for the comment and compliment! I'm glad the podcast is good for you!
There is WAY too much info about wine out in the world and a lot of it is presented in a boring and snotty way. Hopefully the blog and the podcast can break it down in a way that isn't overwhelming and makes it fun.
Regardless of what we or anyone else says, just remember that the most important thing is what you like. If we can help you figure that out/how to get more stuff like what you like, then it's a score for us all!
And BTW -- if the wine shop makes you feel like crap about yourself, go somewhere that doesn't (I sometime like to shop in the grocery store b/c I just want to explore, not be sold to!). If all else fails you can always order online : )
Please check back in and let me know if you have any questions about anything. I'm always happy to clarify anything or add my two cents!
Take care and thanks again,
Elizabeth
