We just scratch the surface of why Bordeaux is such a big deal, talking about:
- Stats that will explain why the area is so significant in the wine world
- The history of Bordeaux and how it became so important in wine
- The basics on geography -- the differences between the left and right banks
- A near end to Bordeaux: phylloxera and a dorky discussion of clones, grafting, and grape species
This is just the beginning. Next week we continue on Bordeaux, discussing the four most important things you need to know to get up to speed.

Yes, I know, its an older post, but I just listened to (and enjoyed) your two-part Bordeaux podcast. As for the right/left bank dilemma, this comes from standard usage when discussing rivers, whether you're talking about dams or Chateaux--directions are always made looking downstream. So, when looking downstream toward the ocean, Medoc is on the left, Cotes de Blaye Cotes de Bourg are on the right.
ReplyDeleteHey Bruce!
ReplyDeleteThanks for writing and for listening. Glad you liked the Bordeaux episode. I'm thinking we'll probably do more on Bordeaux in the future so this won't be the last you'll hear on the matter.
The left bank/right bank thing is hard to explain when people don't know a lot about river navigation. I hope we did it justice, even though we didn't use as eloquent a description as you did above. We want people to understand the differences without getting too hung up on technicalities because in Bordeaux BANK MATTERS!
Between you and me, M.C. Ice is a total disaster when it comes to figuring this out (even though he is nearly a genius about everything else!). I figured if I could make sense of it for him, everyone else would easily be able to grasp it. It may take another go around and I'll use your explanation.
Take care and thanks for writing.
Best regards,
Elizabeth
