Wine for Normal People Radio: Episode 077 -- Alsace, France

In this episode we cover a lot of ground and hit on one of my personal favorite wine regions: Alsace, France.

Here is a link to the podcast: LINK

And the show notes:

  • We introduce our amazing partnership with Vinport.com, for which I am selecting wines that I think are great examples of their regions.
  • Vinport has access to some amazing regions and producers that aren't always widely available. If you live in   state where you can have wine shipped to you, check out my page. Free shipping on 6 or more bottles, great prices, and descriptions of six kick ass wines that will let you taste exactly the attributes M.C. Ice and discuss on the podcast (and as I say on the podcast, I get a small portion of the proceeds, but I selected Vinport as a partner because they let me pick what I wanted to present to you, not what was on their agenda).

  • We do some listener thanks and segway into the podcast with a great listener question on how to get your sweet wine loving friends to transition to different wines! Alsace may be the answer.
Then we get to Alsace.

  • We discuss, the unique geography and climate, dork out on soils, and then discuss the grapes.
  • We tackle the historical ping pong match in the region
  • Then we drill into what to expect from the wines of Alsace (hint: A LOT! This region got me into wine in the first place).
The wines we discuss are:

Hubert Beck Pinot Gris, $17 on Vinport
  • Riesling
  • Gewurztraminer
  • Pinot Gris
  • Pinot Blanc
  • Chasselas (shas-LA)
  • Auxerrois (au-say-WAH)
  • Sylvaner
  • Muscat
  • Pinot Noir.

The wine types we talk about:
  • Edelzwicker
  • Cremant d’Alsace
  • Vendange Tardive
  • Sélection de Grains Nobles (selek-cion de GRAN NuhBLAH),
  • And the Grand Cru wines, including Trimbach Clos St-Hune, one of my top wines ever.

Enjoy! And one more shameless plug my page on Vinport!
